What to Wear To a Photoshoot

What to Wear for Your Photoshoot: Tips to Look and Feel Great

The most common question I get from clients is, “What outfits should we wear for our photoshoot?”. Especially when it comes to a family photoshoot, an in particular if it’s a large family.

Honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this. As the saying goes, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat” (morbid, I know—but it gets the point across!). While there’s no strict rulebook, there are definitely a few pointers worth keeping in mind to make sure you feel great and look your best.

Avoid Logos and Bold Patterns (Unless That’s Your Thing!)

Logos and bold patterns can be pretty distracting in photos. Of course, if your family owns Rip Curl or bold prints are a meaningful part of your heritage, you do you—embrace your style! But generally speaking, it’s best to steer clear of anything that might take the focus away from your beautiful faces.

Instead, opt for plain clothes without logos or patterns. Subtle textures and muted tones work beautifully and help keep the attention where it belongs—on you and your loved ones!

Coordinating Without Matching: How to Work with Colour Palettes

You don’t have to match perfectly—unless you really want to! Some families love the coordinated look, and that’s totally okay. But if that’s not your vibe, don’t stress about everyone wearing the exact same colour.

A great alternative is to work with a colour palette. Pick a few complementary colours that suit your family’s style and blend well together. This way, everyone can wear what they’re comfortable in while still creating a cohesive look. If you’re stuck, try tools like Pinterest or Coolors to get some inspiration!

Natural Fabrics and Textures: Why They Matter

Materials make a difference—trust me on this one. Natural fabrics like cotton and rayon give off a fresh, relaxed vibe, which is perfect for a summery, carefree feel. On the other hand, woolly cardigans and layers can add a cozy, warm touch to your photos—especially during colder months.

Textures can add depth and dimension to your images, so consider incorporating different fabrics to give your photos a more interesting and organic look.

Comfort Is Key: Wear What Makes You Feel Good

This really should be at the top of the list because it’s the golden rule of photoshoot fashion—if you feel uncomfortable, it’s going to show. Your energy, your smile, your vibe—it all changes when you’re feeling good in what you’re wearing.

So above all else, wear something you love and feel confident in. Whether it’s your favourite dress or that perfectly worn-in tee, the goal is to feel like you.
